LAMBRO AREA
aree geografiche
14 March 2007
Nature is almost uncontaminated, traditions are rich and interesting, monuments and churches are really charming.

Lambro area is made of several towns: Ascea, Camerota, Celle di Bulgheria, Centola, Cuccaro Vetere, Futani, Laurito, Montano Antilia, Pisciotta, Roccagloriosa, Rofrano, San Giovanni a Piro and San Mauro La Bruca.

The territory is mainly made of hills but there are also some mountains, for example Bulgheria Mount. On the hills there are olive trees and Mediterranean bush.

These places are really charming with their art, culture, wonderful landscapes and natural products.

HISTORY

There are many legends about this area, for example those about Palinuro and Kamarotòn. Archaeological sites are really interesting: Molpa, Roccagloriosa, Elea-Velia, where the Pre-Socratic philosophy school developed. Parmenide was its most famous exponent. In this area there is the famous Porta Rosa, the only example in the whole Magna Grecia of a Greek arch.

Many populations dominated Lambro area: Longobard, Norman, Svevian, Angevins, Aragons and local families, for example Sanseverino and Caracciolo.

The towns of this area took part to Risorgimento and many citizens died for the ideals of freedom.

FOLKLORE AND EVENTS

  • Our Lady of the Rosary Feast. The statue is brought in procession by six girls. In the past there was the feast dedicated to Our Lady of the Roses, in fact there is still a statue of Our Lady holding a rose in her hands (October), in Alfano
  • Classical theatre performances in the archaeological site and in Parmenide theatre (summer), in Ascea
  • Agruturist. The town goes back to 1800: the narrow streets, the inns, the cellars, the churches, palaces and portals are lighted only by lanterns and fires (August), in Cuccaro Vetere
  • “Parchi ed Oltre” is a very nice event dedicated to the valorisation of the local identities and for the promotion and the development of local cultures and traditions (July), in Futani
  • Popular festival (15th August), in Laurito
  • “Pariglia” festival is very nice: pariglia is a typical dish, made of fried peppers with lard and onions, pork, game and peas, served hot with rice, in Montano Antilia
  • Sausage festival (August), in Roccagloriosa
  • Fusillo festival (August), in Rofrano
  • Scario Musica Festival di Musica Rock, a rock music festival(August), in San Giovanni a Piro

  • Maratona internazionale degli ulivi, a nice marathon dedicated to olive trees (September), in Pisciotta
  • Centolese sausage Festival (August), in Centola

  • The night of Saint Lawrence on Bulgheria Mount (10th August), in Celle di Bulgheria

MONUMENTS AND NATURAL BEAUTIES

  • San Nicola di Mira Church. Inside there are some beautiful and precious statues portraying the saints venerated in the town and a stoup made in calcareous stone, built at the beginning of 1500. The statue of the Saint is beautiful with the colours (green and red) of the clothes and some elements very well portrayed, for example the book and the crosier, in Alfano
  • The archaeological excavations are surrounded by fortified walls with towers. The area was maybe divided in three sections. Two of them were real towns, with a military port, the agora, the thermal baths, a sanctuary and an acropolis, where there is the base of a temple of V century b.C. A real jewel is Porta Rosa, a stone round arch of Greek architecture, of the first half of IV century b.C, in Ascea
  • San Pietro Apostolo Church. Inside there are paintings of 1700, wood statues and a pipe organ. The main altar is really  beautiful with its polychrome marbles and the stone stoups. The door is in bronze and was made by Mario Modica who was inspired by episodes of Saint Peter's life, in Cuccaro Vetere
  • San Marco Church. Inside there is a cinerary urn of Roman age. Today it is used as a baptismal font, in Futani
  • San Filippo D’Agira Church, built in XII century, has wonderful frescoes of 1400 and statues of the Saints. There is also a pipe organ of 1700 and an altar-piece portraying Saint Raphael. These frescoes decorate the walls and the ceiling. The painting portraying the Nativity is really interesting: on the higher part there is the annunciation to shepherds (there is an angel, a shepherd and his sheep), in the middle there is the scene of the birth of Jesus (at the back of the cave there are the three kings). In the lower part there is an episode told by apocryphal evangels: the Virgin is helped in the moment of the birth of her Holy Child by two midwives, Salome and Mea that wash the Child, in Laurito
  • San Nicola di Mira church is very interesting, of Byzantine origin. It is made by only a nave with a great arcade supported by wood columns. There are beautiful altars decorated with stuccoes, of Baroque style. On the right there are small chapels, one is dedicated to Madonna Addolorata, with a marble altar and fine decorations; the other is dedicated to San Pasquale, inside there is a wood statue ruined by the earthquake of 1980. In the sacristy there are ancient pieces of furniture and on the entrance door there is a niche containing a statue portraying Our Lady with the Child, in Montano Antilia
  • Fistelia excavations are very interesting, this area was inhabited in V century b.C. as a tomb with a rich outfit and two bronze pots show. There is also a shrine. This place was very prosperous in fact many jewels (rings, bracelets, necklaces) were found. There are also the ruins of villas built during imperial age, so the area was very rich and developed. These houses were very important, and surely belonged to the most important people of the community, in Roccagloriosa
  • Grottaferrata Sanctuary is very interesting: there is a precious wood Renaissance Crucifix and a very ancient statue portraying Our Lady with the Child, similar to the image of Hera Argiva (they both hold a pomegranate in a hand). Only ruins remain of the ancient monastery: ruins of the walls, of the cloister and of gardens. The plan is octagonal and there are ten altars, in Rofrano
  • San Gaetano da Thiene Church, built around 1660. The church has the shape of a Latin cross, the entrance portal was made in 1813 and there is also a smaller side entrance. The vault was painted in 1979 by the painter D’Angelo, it portrays San Gaetano in adoration of God. The main altar is covered by precious marbles. In the apse there is a statue of the Immaculate sided by two smaller statues. At the bottom of the church there is a stoup made of local stone. Inside the church there is a bell tower, whose spire is Moresque, in San Giovanni a Piro
  • San Mauro Church, of late-Baroque style, with bell tower, from there the Gulf of Palinuro can be admired, in San Mauro la Bruca
  • SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo church is very interesting; it's a real jewel of Baroque art. There is a central nave and two side aisles, with chapels. The naves are linked with arches supported by big rectangular pillars. The apse is semicircular, at its back there is the presbytery. At the point where apse and central nave meet, there is a wonderful triumphal arch. On the right of the central door there is Cappella del Monte dei Morti, in Pisciotta
  • San Nicola di Mira church is a very interesting church; it is in Baroque style and was inaugurated in 1617. Inside there is a silver cross of 1458 and beautiful XVII century stuccoes, in Centola
  • San Nicola di Bari Church is really interesting, it was built in 1400 and contains a Neapolitan crib of 1700, a stoup made with the volcanic stone of Vesuvius, brass chandeliers, in Camerota
  • Santa Sofia Sanctuary is very interesting. On the left there is a bell tower with four floors and three bells. The statue of the saint with the three "daughters" (Faith, Hope and Charity) is really beautiful. There is also a chapel (still existing, it is no more used for religious services) where the saint, dressed as a nun, was venerated, in Celle di Bulgheria

ECONOMY

The territory is mainly made of hills, vegetation is really variegated. Chestnut is the most typical product.

There are delicious dishes in this area: handmade pasta (cavatelli, fusilli, ravioli), goat meat sauce, rissoles made of meat and potatoes, rabbit, kid, aubergines, peppers, "ciambotta" (a dish made of peppers, aubergines and potatoes, they are fried and seasoned with tomatoes and basil); “friarielli” (fried green peppers); “pastorelle” (flaky pastry filled with chestnut cream), etc.

Wicker handicraft is very practised.

There is a good production of liqueurs, syrups and jams with wood fruits.
