CAMPOBASSO, TRADITION AND NATURE
Campobasso is in Biferno River valley, at its back there are the Sannio Mountains and the calcareous Matese mountain. The town is formed by an ancient part that is really very picturesque, of Middle Ages origin. Its artistic value is very high. This part is at the feet of Montebello hill, dominated by the beautiful castle, called Castello Monforte. Then there is a modern part, created in XIX century that is at the feet of the ancient town. In front of the castle there is the Middle Ages hamlet, made of alleys and stairs, at the side of which there are houses made of stones with beautiful inner courtyards. Portals are very interesting. They are made of local stone and are richly decorated, especially with the coats of arms of noble families and allegorical elements. The XIX century part of the town features typical elements of the period: it was designed like a "garden town", in fact there are parks and gardens with rare trees and plants (giant sequoias, cedars of Lebanon, red firs, ilexes, etc.), squares, big and small fountains with fresh and pure water.
