VENICE, A CITY BORN ON THE MUD

This unique city was declared, in 1979, a Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.   It is situated as a magic place on the isles of Venetian lagoon, on the Adriatic Sea. Its charm is increased by the typical phenomenon of water at flood level (it is very common in autumn). The high tide covers the city and it is very difficult to walk along the streets (called calli). People have to use the temporary gangways, sometimes made of wooden axles with iron stands to support them. The city is divided into six ancient districts: Cannaregio, Castello, Santa Croce, San Marco, Dorsoduro and San Polo.

Venice is the most complex and fleeting cities of the world: its "amphibious" nature affects any aspects of life, of individuals and of the whole city. Here everything is two-faced: everything contains its meaning and the opposite one; the flood tide contains both ebb and flow. Venice is the Adriatic Sea and the mainland; the Gothic and the Baroque; Eastern and Western. The city itself is an antinomy, a challenge to nature and an exception of history. Venice was created as a challenge to the sea on the mud of a lagoon. Thomas Mann in his unforgettable "Death in Venice" wrote: "In nessun altro modo se non per nave, dall’ampio mare, si sarebbe dovuto porre il piede nella città inverosimile fra tutte", that is Venice, this improbable city, could be reached only by ship, from the sea. Venice is charming because it seems immutable, it fights against time.

To discover the most hidden corners of the city and live the silence of its cannels, visitors have to choose the gondola, the traditional boats that since 1630 have been painted in black, to recall the terrible plague that struck the city.

The great Swiss architect Le Corbusier said that Venice was a gift of God and had to be left untouched.
