Folklore and events
- Maratona d’Europa: this marathon is really loved by national and international athletes. This event is a moment in which sport, family values and the whole town are celebrated.
- Festival dell’Operetta: this music festival is dedicated to past and contemporary music. A section is dedicated to Vienna traditions; great care is dedicated to modern and contemporary music, to musicals (Broadway).
- Barcolana: this is the most important international regatta in the Mediterranean area; around two thousand boats participate. It is a real feast dedicated to the sea. Technological innovations are presented in this occasion. Competition is very hard.
- Mostra mercato dell’Antiquariato: this antiques market takes place in the maritime station and it is the most important of the region.
- Osmizza: this tradition dates back to Austrian period, when farmers were allowed to sell wine and some products directly for eight days. The name comes from the Slovenian word “osem” that means eight. In 1784 an Imperial decree allowed everyone to sell food, wine, and other products, at any prices. Today visitors can try local wine and typical dishes.
- Majenca: this event celebrates the arrival of spring. It takes place every year in the first week of May. A greasy pole is prepared and people dance under it for three days.
- Festa della Befana: this feast is dedicated to befana on 6th January. A befana is put in Grotta Gigante. Typical Christmas songs are sung and some speleologists descend in the cave.
- Festa dei Turisti: this feast is dedicated to tourists on 15th August in Grotta Gigante.
