Economy
Trieste is like a bridge between East and West. The port is big and has several terminals, also for the commerce with Turkey. One of the most traded products is coffee (it represents one third of the national importations). Many holiday cruisers stop in Trieste.
Mechanic and naval industries are very well developed. One of the most important factories is that of Wärtsilä Italia, former Grandi Motori that produces nautical motors and components for power stations. This factory produced also components for the new power stations in Iraq.
Among the other factories, there is Telit (an important communication company); Illy (coffee producer); Principe and Sfreddo (salami).
Scientific research and tertiary sector are very well developed. In town there are many important insurance companies such as Generali, RAS and Lloyd Adriatico.
Fairs are a very important resource: the institution called Ente Fiera di Trieste was created in 1948 and was very important in the economy during the period after the Second World War. There are many interesting fairs, known also at an international level.
