HISTORY
The name Tramonti come from the ancient "erra Tramonti" and is due to the position of the town, "intra montes", between the mountains. Many finds testify the Roman presence: tombs and coins of the Empire, cinerary urns.
During the Repubblica Marinara, Tramonti lived its most glorious period: it was involved in the defence of Amalfi against the Longobard Arechi II. Amalfi became a republic in 839 and from that moment it became more and more powerful. Tramonti contributed to its growth, like the other towns of the coast and was advantaged by its commercial relations and its wealth.
The most important noble families were Geta, De Maio, Fontanella, Giordano, Marciano, Palumbo, Conte, Cesarano, Romano, Pisacane, Citarella, Fierro, De Rosa, Vitagliano, Pisano. Many inhabitants of Tramonti became famous as bishops, journalists, lawyers, painters etc. When Norman armies with Salernitani led by Ruggiero il "Normanno" assaulted Amalfi, Tramonti fought against them. Under the Normans, Amalfi saw a period of decline that involved also Tramonti.
