MONUMENTS AND NATURAL BEAUTIES

  • Mole Antonelliana: this building was erected by architect starting from 1863 and it is 167 m. tall. The lift brings visitors (the trip lasts 59 seconds) to the dome where there is a small belvedere. The Mole was one of the first buildings being illuminated thanks to gas at the end of XIX century. It host the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (the only national museum in Italy dedicated to cinema). There are optical pre-cinematographic machines (magic lanterns), items coming from the first Italian movies, and many other charming things.

  • Complesso del Valentino: Valentino park develops along the banks of Po. It is one of the symbols of Turin. The park first developed around the Castle (today the castle is the seat of the faculty of Architecture). During the event of Esposizione Generale Italiana in 1884 there was the creation of the so-called Middle Age village and of the Rock that is the re-creation of the main stylistic and architectural Piedmontese features. Ceppi fountain is really interesting (inaugurated in 1898); it is called of "Dodici Mesi" (twelve months): it is made of a big rococo basin surrounded by statues that represent the twelve months of the year.

  • Duomo di San Giovanni Battista: this cathedral is the only Renaissance church in Turin. In it there is the Holy Shroud that is the linen cloth that according to tradition wrapped Jesus’ body. On it there is the image of a man, that shows some elements about the Passion of the Christ as described by Gospels: the man "portrayed" on the shroud seems to have been flagellated, crowned with spines, crucified and pierced with a spear though his chest.

  • Palazzo Reale: this royal palace was the house of Savoia family and it is one of the richest royal houses in Europe. In front of the palace there is Piazza Castello, the heart of the ancient town.

  • Basilica di Superga: this church was ordered by king Vittorio Amedeo II to thank Our Lady after the victory against the French armies that had invaded Turin in 1706. There are the rich tombs of Savoia family. It was made by Filippo Juvarra and it is situated on Superga hill, at 670 m above the sea level. The rear part of the basilica was hit on 4th May 1949 by the airplane coming from Lisbon that brought home the soccer team, called "Grande Torino" for its strength. Players and technical staff of the team died, as well as the journalists and the crew. The walls are still as they were after the impact and they will be never rebuilt to remember the tragedy.

  • Palazzo Madama: the complete name of this palace is Palazzo Madama e Casaforte degli Acaja, a cadet branch of Savoia. Here the sessions of Senato Subalpino and of the first Italian Senate took place.

  • Palazzo Carignano: in it there is the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano, a museum dedicated to Italian Risorgimento.

  • Chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio: this church is one of the most loved by the inhabitants, it is situated at the feet of Turin hill, in a charming place, near the Po. The structure recalls that of Pantheon.

  • Porte Palatine: the Roman northern entrance to the town.

  • Lingotto: it was one of the main production facility of Fiat. Today it is a multifunction centre: there is an area devoted to fairs, a picture gallery, an auditorium, a meeting centre, two hotels, a multi-room cinema, a shopping centre and very good restaurants.

  • Complesso del Monte dei Cappuccini: the square in front of this church is a real terrace over Turin, from there visitors can admire the valleys and the charming Alps. On this hill there is the church of Santa Maria del Monte, a monastery and the Museo Nazionale della Montagna, a museum dedicated to mountain.

  • Teatro Regio: this theatre was inaugurated in 1740, it is very important for cultural and artistic life of Turin and Piedmonte.

  • Orto Botanico: since 1700 it has been one of the most important botanic centres of Italy. It is known all over the world.

  • Osservatorio Astronomico: this astronomic observatory was created in 1759 and it is one of the most important in Europe.

  • Piazza San Carlo: this square is considered the salon of Turin thanks to the porticos that surround it. On its Southern part it is closed by two twin churches: S. Caro and S. Cristina. At the centre of the square there is the statue portraying Emanuele Filiberto, inaugurated in 1838, it was the first monument ever erected in a square of Turin.

  • Museo Egizio: in this museum, dedicated to Egypt, there is the second richest and most famous collection of the world after that of Cairo.

  • Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile: this museum is dedicated to cars, there is the first car produced by Fiat (1899), called Itala, that won the Peking – Paris race in 1907.

  • Chiesa di S. Lorenzo: it is one of the most important Baroque churches of Italy thanks to its beautiful dome by Guarini.

 

  • Santuario della Consolata: this sanctuary is Baroque, many people go there for a pilgrimage devoted to a miraculous portrait of Our Lady that is on the main altar, by Juvarra.
