HISTORY Scala was founded in IV century by Roman people shipwrecked while on their way to Constantinople. It became very rich thanks to commerce as the many monuments testify. It rivalled Ravello and was sacked by Pisani in XII century and this is when its decadence began. It was invaded by Roberto il Guiscardo (1073) and Pisani (1135 e 1137).
In XIII century there was the constitution of the “sedile dei nobili”, a record of all the noble families of the town: D’Afflitto, Rufolo, Muscettola, Trara, Coppola, Saxo, etc., and this is an evidence of how much important nobles were in Scala and in the whole Coast. The famous Friar Gerardo belonged to Saxo family: he was the founder in XI century of “Ordine degli Ospedalieri di Gerusalemme”, then Knights of Malta.
In Scala also S. Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori lived in 1730. Thanks to his support, in 1731 Sister Maria Celeste Crostarosa, today Venerable, founded the Order of Redemptorists. An year later, S. Alfonso founded the Congregation of SS. Redentore.
