History

The story of Sabaudia is linked to that of the ancient Circei, today S. Felice. The name Circeo comes from circus, circum, circiter, circino, circinus: these Latin words indicate the idea of a circular motion. They maybe refer to the winds of the area and to their motion around the promontory. The first population that inhabited this area belonged to the Italic populations that settled on the coasts of Lazio, from Monti della Tolfa to Circeo. Later, around 1000 b.C. these peoples were attacked by many populations, among them Etrurians. During the age of Tarquinio il Superbo around 509 b.C. (the last Roman king of Etrurian origin), a colony was founded in Circeo region. Tarquinio believed that people had to be useful, and so he decided to use these people to build a new town. After the fall of the Etrurian dominion, many peoples governed the area, among them "Volsci" and "Equi". They fought a lot to conquer this territory and they eventually signed a treaty. "Volsci" were defeated in 393 b.C.

Sabaudia was founded on 5th August 1933 after the drainage of the area organized by Fascist government. The town was inaugurated on 15th April 1934. The geographic position was strategic: it was the perfect place for "an elegant tourism". Four young architects that won a competition designed the town: Gino Cancellotti, Eugenio Montuori, Luigi Piccinato and Alfredo Scalpelli. They created a rationalist town, a town whose heart is represented by the city centre around which the rest of it develops.
