Reggio is an important tourist destination thanks to its historical-cultural wealth and the beauty of its sea. It is also a university town and a rich agricultural centre thanks to its fertile land and its mild climate. A typical production is that of bergamot oranges. It is a citrus growing only here and it is one of the symbols of the town. The cells of the peel of the fruit contain a real precious essence called "green gold". Another typical product is jasmine, of which the so-called "Jasmine coast" is really rich.
There are also other cultivations: olive trees (olive oil is really strong); vineyards (there is the production of very tasteful wines, such as Pellaro, Arghillà and Sambatello); chestnuts; cereals; citruses. Among citruses there are the famous Clementine di Calabria DOP.
Industrial sector is not really developed in town. There are only medium and small factories: most of them process bergamot oranges. But there is also a good production of coffee, liqueurs, furniture, etc.
Commerce is very well developed, thanks to the presence of typical products, such as bergamot oranges, silk, etc.
