PALERMO, A WONDERFUL CORNER CALLED “THE FLOWER”
Palermo is at the feet of Pellegrino Mount, in the deepest part of a gulf. At east there is Alfano Mount. The town is in a natural amphitheatre, called Conca d’Oro. The name comes from the Greek Pan-Ormos “all port”. It is considered the heart of cultural and economical relationships between Mediterranean Sea and Europe.
The Arabian cartographer El – Idrisi, Mohammed’s descendant, in 1150 described Palermo as the most beautiful town of the world.
Landscapes are really beautiful and the town breathes a mixed atmosphere, made of Eastern and European features.
The ancient part of the town, called “Phoenician foot” of Palermo (the biggest in Europe) is divided in four parts (Loggia - Castellammare, Tribunali-Kalsa, Palazzo Reale and Monte di Pietà-Capo), they are linked thanks to the historical roads of the town: Cassaro and Via Maqueda.
The famous traveller Guy de Maupassant arrived in Palermo in 1886 and described the beauties of the town, of its houses, of its roads, of the sea.
Palermo is a modern and an ancient town: past and present meet and mix in a mysterious way. For example, in the streets of Palermo it is still possible to see the famous carts of Sicily: they are made of several parts, they are all richly carved and decorated. The scenes are taken from the story of Charles the Great and his men, the story of the Thousand and the religious traditions.
