Agriculture and sheep-farming are very important resources. Today the town is developing and enriching thanks to the institution of University of Salerno on its territory. The university campuses are in the two main hamlets: Fisciano and Lancusi. There are 9 faculties, 29 departments, 8 sports’ centres, libraries with more than 500.000 books and more than 50.000 students. In the future there will be the institution of the faculty of Medicine: in Salerno there was the glorious Scuola Medica Salernitana. The industrial sector is very interesting, too: the first branches of Socialist Party were created in the hamlet of Penta. There are many chemical, engineering, tannery, ceramics and agroalimentar industries. A typical handicraft activity is the working of copper.
