HISTORY
This territory has been inhabited by very well-organized populations since Neolithic period.
In IX century people coming from Southern Etruria arrived. They brought a civilised society and the "villanoviana" culture on which Etruscans were grafted. They chose Eboli for its natural link role between Valle del Sele and the surrounding hills.
It was first destroyed by Alarico (410) and then by Saracens and returned to life thanks to Longobards, which made of it the core of the defensive system for the Principality of Salerno. With Federico II Eboli became a very important political and religious town, this role was strengthened by Angevins. The secretary of Philip II of Spain became Prince of Eboli.
Eboli is a symbol of the fights against abuses, as "Arco dei Tredici" episode shows: thirteen greedy nobles were killed in 1647. During 1940s and 1950s, then, people of Eboli fought hard to obtain just drained lands.
