Eboli, where not only Christ stopped
The ancient Eburum was a rich commercial and handicraft town, on the boundary between Campania and Lucania. It was first destroyed by Alarico (410) and then by Saracens and returned to life thanks to Longobards, which made of it the core of the defensive system for the Principality of Salerno.
With Federico II Eboli became a very important political and religious town, this role was strengthened by Angevins. The secretary of Philip II of Spain became Prince of Eboli. Eboli is a symbol of the fights against abuses, as "Arco dei Tredici" episode shows: thirteen greedy nobles were killed in 1647. During 1940s and 1950s, then, people of Eboli fought hard to obtain drained lands.
Eboli is part of the area characterized by the production of "mozzarella dop (denomination of protected origin)", in fact there is a good dairy farming. The trade fair for agriculture, trade, industry, tourism and handicraft (September) is very famous.
The territory is variegated: Eboli goes from the hills of Picentini Mountains to the sea. Its seaside is crossed by a very long cycle path, one of the longest in Italy and it is bordered by a thick pinewood, 8 km long.
Eboli offers the possibility to take part to several important events, like "From Eburum to Eboli", a journey in traditions and habits (usually, June) but also to visit monuments and churches, like Saint Francis Monument, seat of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Valle del Sele.
