The origin of the name is not very well known, maybe it comes from the noble Roman family: Collia. In IX century Colliano was invaded by barbaric populations, that destroyed the hamlets, so, the inhabitants decided to move towards the mountains. In effect, the town developed on the rocks, and this is a peculiarity of Colliano. Colliano was ruled by different families during the centuries: Blanch, De Riso, Alemagna, Caracciolo and del Duca di Martina. Colliano was first mentioned in a letter that Pope Innocent III wrote to Bishop of Conza in 1200. Normans gave to this area its richest and fruitful period.
