HISTORY The name was first mentioned after the building of Augustan waterworks. This was used as the place to expurgate the waters, then it disappeared and was substituted by a “cistern”, where Saltero River poured its waters used by the citizens. Longobards spread the cult of Saint George (the warrior Saint on his powerful white horse with a red mantle, red like the blood of the Christian martyrs). Princes of Salerno used to go to San Giorgio castle to spend their holidays. In that castle there were the agreements about the conspiracy of the barons against the king of Naples. The territory never had a ruler but many proprietors. It became an independent municipality on the 26th January 1810 after the Sanseverino State was dismantled.
