Folklore and events

  • Processione del Venerdì Santo: the procession of Good Friday is one of the most important events of the town. The choir is made of around 800 singers that sing a chant of the first years of 1900, "Teco vorrei o Signore", written by Michele De Nigris using verses by Pietro Metastasio. Many people participate and live the events of the Passion of Jesus Christ.

  • Festività della Madonna dei Monti: this feast takes place on 31st May in the narrow streets of the ancient part of the town and there are sacred and symbolic scenes.
  • Sagra di Misteri: this event takes place on the day dedicated to the feast of Corpus Domini and it is the most important event in the popular and religious traditions of Molise. The procession is made of thirteen "Mysteries" or "machines" created in 1748 by artist Paolo Saverio di Zinno. The machines are made of steel and the base is made of wood. They are brought by men that sing while walking. The mysteries portray episodes taken by the Old and New Testament. In Campobasso "Mysteries" live: children, old people, adults transform themselves in saints, angels and demons and are brought on wood and steel boxes creating a charming effect. They seem to fly. Each Mystery is led by a leader, called ‘capo-Mistero’ or ‘capurale’. Mysteries portray scenes and episodes from the Bible and from the lives of the Saints. In 1805 these machines were severely damaged by the earthquake, and then they were restored by Giuseppe Di Zinno, the artist’s son.
  • Pace fra Crociati e Trinitari: this historical procession aims to celebrate the peace between the two confraternities, Crociati and Trinitari. The procession goes along the streets of the town and creates a charming atmosphere of the past. Participants wear the traditional costumes and are led by a guide, who represents Simon of Cyrene bringing a cross. The apostle Peter brings a golden key (of Heaven) and a black key (of Hell). Jude brings a bag with the thirty silver coins.
