Commerce and agriculture are the main activities (oil, distilleries, and pasta are the main resources). The most typical production is that of winter pears. Products from breeding are another important resource.

Handicraft is very developed, too. The most important products are knives and scissors. They have been produced since Middle Ages and in the past they were considered the best in Europe.

In 1982 there was the settlement of the University, Università degli Studi del Molise: it is one of the most important in Southern Italy.

Research has been developing fast in the last years: recently a research centre, Centro di Ricerca e Formazione ad Alta Tecnologia nelle Scienze Biomediche of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, was settled. The most advanced sectors are those of oncology, cardiac illnesses and transplants.
