BARI, THE QUEEN OF PUGLIE
Bari is on Adriatic coast, on a plain, at south-east of Ofanto River and arrives to the plateau of Murge. Bari is a merchant city as the important fair, Fiera del Levante, shows. This fair is an essential symbol of Bari. After the one of Milan, it is the most important in Italy and one of the most interesting in Europe. Bari is a cultural city, too. In Bari the publishing house Laterza spread the writings of the great philosopher Benedetto Croce, notwithstanding censorship during fascist period.
The city is divided into two parts: a newer one developed at the beginning of 1800 and older one containing the most important Middle Ages and Renaissance monuments.
