Umbria is a “green region” and has a great ancient charm enriched by a deep spirituality. Spoleto is situated on Sant’Elia hill and observes events while has observed the path Tessino river for 2700 years. Of those ancient times strong walls still remain: they were built by Umbri people using huge stones. This area was conquered by Romans and these walls show Roman influence in the structure and in the technique used. The ancient Spoletium has left many interesting remains to the modern town, such as the Roman Theatre (I century a.C.), Druso and Germanico Arch (23 a.C.) or the house that belonged to the mother of Emperor Vespasiano (Vespasia Polla).
There are also other walls, built during Middle Ages and it is intact: the Middle Ages charm of the town is still strong. The famous Lucrezia Borgia governed Spoleto on behalf of her father, Pope Alexander VI, and this fact shows how important this town was. The most important place of the town is Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral has a wonderful mosaics in Byzantine style with the Blessing Christ between Our Lady and Saint John the Evangelist. The façade is beautiful.
This square is so beautiful that it is often used for shows and international events.
The archaeological museum is very interesting, as well as the picture gallery and the many monuments of this rich territory. Landscape is extraordinarily beautiful, with woods and olive trees.
